The first character, “rei,” is often used to mean “command” or “order,” imparting an authoritarian nuance that offends some. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his government prefer “good” or “beautiful”, a less widely known sense. The second character, “wa,” is defined as “peace” or “harmony”, and together they mean “beautiful harmony,” Japan’s consulate in New York said in a bid to dispel confusion. “It does not mean ‘order and harmony’ as has been reported in the press,” the consulate said in a statement.
For the first time, the new name was taken from an ancient Japanese source — an anthology of poems called the Manyoshu — instead of old Chinese texts.

Emperor Akihito, 85, is preparing to step down at the end of the month, drawing the curtain on his three-decade reign. His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, 59, will replace him May 1, marking the beginning of the new era.
Akihito announced in 2016 that he wished to abdicate because he was concerned that his advancing years and deteriorating strength were making it difficult for him to fulfill his duties. He will be the first emperor to step down in about 200 years and a special law had to be passed to allow him to do so.

日本文化を英語でアメリカ人に紹介するのはとっても難しい。なぜなら、自分自身がしっかりと日本の事を知っていなければならないから。ニューヨークに来てから思うことは、「自分は日本人なんだ」ということ。人種のるつぼと言われるニューヨークでは基本的にもともとみんな人種が違うので、人と比べあって競い合うような事はないけど(私の知る限り⁈)、その代わりにしっかりとした「自分」と「その歴史」を知って「自己主張」ができないと大変かも。自分探しの旅でニューヨークに来た人は、ニューヨークで色々な国から来た人と触れ合って、自分の国を紹介できるようになって見てね！自分探し中の時は自分としっかり向き合うことだから。
